Today we looked at how different newspapers presented stories and people in different ways. We collected a number of articles to see how they presented people. In particular, we looked at the sun newspaper and how they represented women in comparison to men. We watched a video which visually showed the difference, by collecting the sun for 6 months and cutting out pictures of men and women, and then sticking them side by side.
From this video we learned that the sun had presented women mostly posing for photos, while the men were taken when they were doing things life football. The sun is a newspaper renowned for its sports content and over 6 months there was not one image of a woman doing sport. Mostly the women were passive, posing, and either smiling or pouting for those photos. This suggests that the only important part was how they looked. This may seem unimportant but it is a reinforced message to women that they have to look a certain way. Mental health issues have risen in females about their body shape because of this message. This video's message was to stop page 3 because it is harmful. I also looked at a similar experiment that was about a campaign to stop the sun from printing page 3 because it promoted negative body image: Sexism in the media
